The promise and limits of Reconstruction

Unit Three: The Unfinished Work of Liberty · Chapter 16

The big idea Read the whole chapter, then test what you can explain from its evidence.

Read Chapter 16 first

Read The Promise and Limits of Reconstruction, pages 647–687, including the opening discussion, all five sections, and the chapter features. Begin only after completing Chapter 15.

This checkpoint checks the whole chapter. If your reading slot starts at page 649, this is not a checkpoint for that range alone: read the chapter’s opening pages too before attempting it.

Read with questions

For each section, note its question, an example the author uses, and what the example helps explain. Use the section heading to find evidence, not as an answer by itself.

When you meet a law, political organization, or conflict, ask who acted, how the action worked, and whose options changed. Record what the text establishes and what it leaves uncertain.

Connect and verify

Choose two different sections. Explain how one complicates or qualifies the other, then check your explanation against the text. Record a short anchor phrase from each and explain why each matters.

Open Reading checkpoint after finishing the chapter. It has three short responses and one synthesis essay of at least 150 words, with three tries each. Shorts clear at 3 or 4; the essay clears at 80/100. It is portal practice, not a Canvas course grade.
