3.5 Reconstruction: ending the rebellion

Unit Three: The Unfinished Work of Liberty · Chapter 15

The big idea Read the assigned chapter before opening the checkpoint. Build your own explanation from the text and evidence.

Break down Chapter 15 Reconstruction

Use a reading routine that keeps your explanation grounded in the assigned textbook.

Not sure about the basics underneath this lesson?

Read Chapter 15 first

Read Ending the Rebellion and (Re)constructing the Nation, pages 609–645, in your assigned textbook. Read the introduction, all six sections, and the chapter features. This page helps you organize your reading; it does not supply the chapter’s argument.

The checkpoint covers this whole chapter, not Chapter 16. If today’s assignment is only part of the chapter, finish those pages first and save the whole-chapter checkpoint until you have finished the chapter.

Make an evidence trail

For each section, write one question the author is trying to answer. Record a short phrase and its page number that would help you answer it. Add your explanation of what the evidence shows, rather than copying a paragraph.

Mark any distinction between a stated aim, a policy that acted on it, and a result. Check whether the result matched the aim. Keep different groups and places distinct.

Check the reading

Close your notes and explain one important connection between two sections. Then reopen the chapter and verify both parts of your explanation.

Open Reading checkpoint for three short responses and one synthesis essay of at least 150 words. Each question allows three tries. Shorts clear at 3 or 4; the essay clears at 80/100. This is portal practice, not a Canvas course grade.

Continue the Reconstruction reading

After this chapter, read Chapter 16: The promise and limits of Reconstruction, pages 647–687. Complete its separate checkpoint before treating the two-chapter reading as reviewed.
