The big idea Part I asks for a well-defined complex problem, at least two connected sub-problems, and three research sources. It does not ask for the final engineered solution yet.

What Part I must contain

Submit five things: (1) a description of a complex real-world problem, (2) why you chose it, (3) at least two manageable and solvable sub-problems, (4) an explanation of how those sub-problems arise from the overall problem and how their solutions connect, and (5) at least three research sources. The course allows a Word document, PowerPoint, flow chart, video, or another online presentation method.

Define the problem before proposing a fix

Name the people and the need

Write one sentence that identifies who has the problem, what is happening, and why solving it matters. A broad topic such as “pollution” is not yet a defined problem.

Separate causes into sub-problems

Choose at least two factors that contribute to the main problem. Each should be smaller, researchable, and possible to address on its own.

Draw the connection

For each sub-problem, explain how it contributes to the larger problem. Then state why solving both pieces would move the overall problem toward a solution.

Collect sources, not decoration

List at least three sources that can supply evidence about the problem, affected people, causes, criteria, or constraints. The assignment does not require a particular citation format for this part.

Criteria are not constraints

A criterion says what a successful solution should accomplish. A constraint is a limit every solution must respect, such as cost, time, safety, law, reliability, or available materials. Priorities matter when one solution meets a high-value criterion better but creates a trade-off elsewhere. Part I centers on defining the problem and sub-problems, but recording early criteria and constraints makes later parts easier.

Submission check

Before uploading, read the presentation once as if the teacher has never heard of the problem. The main problem should be specific. Both sub-problems should be named and explained, not listed as labels. The connection between each piece and the overall problem should be visible. Open all three source links or citations. Check that the chosen file or link is the finished presentation, not notes or an empty template.
