Module 01 โ Basics of Anatomy and Physiology ยท quiz worth 36 pts ยท 2026-08-18
The big ideaSpecialized cells form tissues, tissues form organs, and organ systems coordinate metabolism to maintain a stable internal environment.
Use a build-up chain
This lesson connects several scales. Keeping them in order makes the tissue questions much easier.
Not sure about the basics underneath this lesson?
1
Build upward
Organelle inside a cell. Similar specialized cells make tissue. Several tissues make an organ. Organs cooperate in a system.
2
Identify tissue with two clues
Use microscopic structure plus function. A lining of tightly packed cells is epithelial; a striated contracting fiber is muscle.
3
Separate the two balance words
Homeostasis is the stable target. Metabolism is the set of energy-handling reactions that helps the body reach it.

Which is larger, a tissue or an organ?
An organ, because it contains multiple tissues.

Life depends on specialized cells
The lesson names five characteristics of life: living things contain cells, grow, reproduce, maintain homeostasis, and respond to stimuli. Early stem cells contain the body's full DNA instructions. During differentiation, different genes direct different proteins, producing specialized cells such as neurons, muscle cells, bone cells, blood cells, and skin cells.
Levels of organization
From smallest to largest: atom โ molecule โ macromolecule โ organelle โ cell โ tissue โ organ โ organ system. Each level is built from the level before it. A heart is an organ because several tissue types cooperate in one structure; the cardiovascular system includes the heart and blood vessels working together.
Germ layers begin the tissue plan
Embryonic stem cells form three germ layers. Ectoderm contributes structures such as skin and nervous tissue. Mesoderm contributes structures such as bone, blood, and muscle. Endoderm contributes linings and organs including liver and pancreatic tissue. The lesson then groups mature tissues by structure and function.
Four tissue groups
Epithelial tissue covers and lines, with tightly packed cells used for protection, secretion, absorption, and excretion. Muscle tissue contracts for movement. Nervous tissue carries impulses through neurons and support cells. Connective tissue binds, supports, protects, fills spaces, stores fat, and includes forms as different as blood, cartilage, and bone.
Histology clues
Histology studies microscopic tissue structure. Squamous epithelial cells are flat, cuboidal cells are cube-shaped, and columnar cells are tall. Skeletal muscle has long striated fibers with many nuclei; smooth muscle has tapered cells with one nucleus and no striations; cardiac muscle branches and has intercalated discs. Neurons have a large cell body and long processes. Connective tissue varies widely, so matrix and support structure matter.
Homeostasis uses energy
Homeostasis keeps internal conditions within a stable range. Metabolism includes the reactions that obtain, release, and use energy. When body temperature drops, regulation triggers shivering and metabolism supplies ATP for muscle contraction. The tissue response pushes temperature back toward its normal range.
Upload boundary
The 36-point course upload asks you to identify tissue samples, describe structures and functions, and connect one tissue with a disease using the provided worksheet and lesson resources. This portal reviews the science but does not fill in the worksheet, choose a disease, or write the submitted response.
Not sure about this bit?
Use the portal to check the science, then return to the actual worksheet.
1
For each sample
Write the tissue group, a visible structural clue, its likely function, and the organ system connection.
2
For the disease connection
Choose from the assignment instructions and course sources. Do not let a practice answer become submitted writing.

Practice tissue reasoning
Use structure, location, and function together instead of matching by color alone.
