WACHE School Safety Team ยท 2026โ€“2027 Action Plan

Emergency Safety Quick Reference

Concise action protocols for staff, teachers, assistants, and administrators.

1. Medical Emergencies

Immediate response, 911 protocols, and care coordination

Priority

๐Ÿ“ž 911 call information required from the red folder

  • Specific location: Campus address, building number, and room number.
  • Details: Number of people involved and nature of the illness or injury.
  • Rule: Stay on the line until help arrives. Do not move an ill or injured person unless immediate danger requires it.

Teacher / Assistant

Call 911 if immediate attention is required. The assistant notifies the nearest Support Staff member immediately. Keep the classroom calm and yield to responders when they arrive.

Support Staff

Notify Admin of the medical issue and confirm whether 911 was dispatched.

Admin

Locate on-site medical professionals to assist before EMS arrives; notify parents or emergency contacts; direct EMS to the room location.

Campus first aid supplies: First Aid Kits, AED device, Stop the Bleed Kit, Bloodborne Pathogen Kit, NARCAN, Sharps Container, and Nitrile Gloves.

2. Fire Emergencies

Investigation, rapid notification, and safe evacuation

Evacuation
  1. 1. InvestigateNever ignore smoke or flames.
  2. 2. Radio and alarmSupport Staff broadcast; Admin pulls the alarm.
  3. 3. EvacuateMove at least 75 feet upwind and take roll.
Support Staff radio script โ€œ[Name] to Safety Team. There is a fire in [Location]. I am beginning evacuation of [Assigned Area]. Repeat, there is a fire in [Location], begin evacuation.โ€

Teacher / Assistant

Grab the red folder. Line students up two by two and leave belongings behind. The teacher calmly leads from the front; the assistant sweeps the rear and makes sure no stragglers remain. Evacuate to the designated area, take roll, and text anomalies to the Safety Coordinator.

Support Staff

Direct classes to the nearest safe emergency exit away from the fire. Check assigned classrooms and bathrooms for stragglers. Confer with teachers outside for roll call.

  • Never use elevators. Feel doors with the back of your hand before opening.
  • Crawl low under smoke. Stay at least 75 feet away and beyond fire lanes.
  • Do not move cars. Do not re-enter until the Director or Safety Coordinator gives the official โ€œAll Clear.โ€

3. Severe Weather and Tornadoes

Tornado watch versus warning and sheltering protocols

Shelter
Tornado watch

Conditions are favorable. Admin monitors National Weather Service reports. Be alert and prepared.

Tornado warning

A tornado has been detected or sighted (25โ€“40 mph). Immediate protective sheltering action is required.

Admin

Broadcasts the Tornado Warning by radio to Support Staff, assists as needed, and then seeks shelter.

Support Staff

Immediately notifies teachers in assigned zones, directs classes to the nearest designated shelter, and then seeks shelter.

Teacher / Assistant

Grab the red folder, move students quickly without running to the designated interior shelter, take roll, report anomalies to the Safety Coordinator, and wait for the โ€œAll Clear.โ€

  • Indoor: Move to interior rooms away from windows and unsupported wide ceiling spans. Do not use gymnasiums. Close window blinds if time allows.
  • Position: Crouch low, get under a desk or table, and protect the head and neck. Do not use elevators.
  • Outdoor: Take cover in low culverts or behind low retaining walls if unable to get inside.

4. Lockdowns and Hostile Persons

Active threats, armed intruders, and tactical response

Lockdown

๐Ÿ“ข Initiation signal

Support Staff: Blow the whistle several times and loudly shout โ€œLOCKDOWN CLASSROOMS!โ€

Radio alert: โ€œWe have an active shooter at/in [Location]. Lockdown all classrooms.โ€

RunIf there is a safe path out. Do not run straight; use cover such as trees or cars.
HideLock and barricade doors, turn lights off, and silence all devices.
DefendAs a last resort, use heavy objects as weapons. Know your backdrop.

Teacher / Assistant classroom checklist

  • Lock doors. If there is no lock, barricade with heavy furniture or use a body-weight anchor.
  • Move students to the farthest corner away from sightlines, doors, and windows. Close blinds.
  • Turn off lights and audio. Silence cell phones, smart devices, and radios.
  • Use the red folder to note missing students or extra students sheltered. Text updates if safe.
  • Do not open doors until authorized law enforcement demands entry.

Support Staff notes

Secure hallway doors if safe. Pull students out of multi-stall bathrooms into classrooms; multi-stall bathrooms do not lock, while single bathrooms do. Silence devices.

Law enforcement arrival: Obey all commands immediately. Keep empty hands up. If armed under LTC, notify officers according to training. Expect to be detained or handcuffed for safety until the scene is secured. Do not leave until released.
